SAN DIEGO, CA, June 11, 2011 (Press-News.org) In this month's edition of Manufacturing Digital we visit Rolls-Royce's phenomenal Goodwood manufacturing facility to discover how each and every car is lovingly hand-assembled by a team of dedicated and highly skilled employees.
Even before construction of Goodwood began, Rolls-Royce, alongside architect Sir Nicolas Grimshaw, wanted the facility to blend in with the surroundings and be as environmentally friendly as possible. Inside, the assembly line is more like a design studio than a manufacturing plant, as it is bathed in glorious natural light.
Each car passes through at least 60 pairs of hands, with each process completed and documented thoroughly. Hundreds of sub-assemblies ranging from the car's engine to the interior seating line the main assembly route as each vehicle's unique character begins to grow.
This month we also take a look at Bowers & Wilkins stunning Nautilus loudspeakers. In John Bowers' own words, "If you produce a better product, they will buy it." It is this fundamental ideology which has seen the company become one of the world's most well recognised and respected loudspeaker manufacturers.
In addition, we look at the world's first interactive paper computer which could revolutionise consumer electronics. Canadian researchers feel they have taken a step forward in the development of future smartphones and tablets with this latest concept device.
