Appalachian Trail Conservancy Visitor Center to Host Iron Chef Style Cooking Contest

This press release is inviting the public to join the Appalachian Trail Conservancy Visitor Center for an Iron Chef style cooking contest.

2011-06-11
HARPERS FERRY, WV, June 11, 2011 (Press-News.org) On June 25, 2011, the Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC) Visitor Center in Harpers Ferry will be hosting an Iron Chef style cooking contest from 12-2 p.m. Out of all the hikers who cook on the Appalachian Trail (A.T.), a few become recognized for their culinary skills and earn the Trail name, "Trail Chef". Using ingredients commonly carried on the A.T., hikers will have an opportunity to showcase their Trail culinary skills and win prizes.

"The Appalachian Trail Conservancy is excited to be able to offer this event to the public, providing visitors with a glimpse of life on the Trail," stated Laurie Potteiger, Information Services Manager at the ATC.

The ATC will provide basic ingredients for the competitors, who may also use ingredients they frequently carry with them on the Trail. Trail chefs must use their own backpacking cookware and stoves.

Participants will have an hour to prepare their meals. A panel of the ATC staff along with several audience members will judge the contestants' creations on taste, appearance, and originality. Contestants will also walk visitors through their meals and share past cooking stories. After judging, visitors will have a chance to sample the contestants' dishes.

The event will take place at the ATC Visitor Center, located at 799 Washington St, Harpers Ferry, WV. Anyone interested in participating should arrive at the Visitor Center shortly before 12 p.m.
