Wincup 'Serving A Better Way' With The Introduction of Vio, Giving Foam a New End of Life

Wincup today announces the launch of Vio - the first EPS foam cup and high impact polystyrene (HIPS) lid with EcoPure technology. Vio cups have shown to biodegrade under conditions that simulate** a biologically active landfill*.

2011-06-15
STONE MOUNTAIN, GA, June 15, 2011 (Press-News.org) New Wincup Holdings Inc., a national leader in the manufacturing and distribution of cups, foodservice containers, lids and straws today announces the launch of Vio -- the first expandable polystyrene (EPS) foam cup and high impact polystyrene (HIPS) lid with EcoPure technology. Vio cups with EcoPure have been shown to biodegrade under conditions that simulate a biologically active landfill*, using the ASTM D5511-11 test**.

Wincup turns to science and product innovation in its drive to 'Serving a Better Way,' expanding its product offerings to include the new Vio foodservice line.

"Being environmentally responsible has always been important to us and is most evident in the products we make and how we make them," states George W. Wurtz, CEO of Wincup. "EPS foam has always consumed less energy and emitted fewer greenhouse gases during the manufacturing process than paper and plastic beverage cups. Now with the introduction of Vio we have created a new end of life story for EPS foam cups and HIPS lids that further demonstrates our commitment to the environment."

Vio cups preserve the superior performance characteristics of traditional EPS foam and meet FDA standards. Vio foam cups have been found to biodegrade an average of 14.2 percent in the first 133 days of testing under conditions that simulate a biologically active landfill*, using the ASTM D5511-11 test**.

Launching in June, Vio initially offers cups and lids in 8, 12, 16 and 20-ounce sizes, with additional items to follow.

"'Serving a Better Way' at Wincup has always stood for our ability to serve customers with superior products in terms of durability, insulation, performance, and value; and now, with the launch of Vio , we can add innovation to that list," states Kevin Keneally, president of Wincup. "We are very focused on providing new and innovative products that solve the needs of not only our customers but our environment as well. Vio is our first step in improving the end of life story for EPS Foam. It is not, however, the only one. We're actively working on introducing a recycled EPS Foam product as well. So, stay tuned. We're excited about our new technology developments and the improvements they will have to the environment."

* Present tests at 49% solids content approach the conditions of wetter landfills, such as in the Southeastern U.S. Biodegradation rates may be lower in landfills in other areas of the U.S. depending on moisture level in those landfills.

** ASTM D5511-11 specifies: This test method also may resemble some conditions in biologically active landfills where the gas generated is recovered and biogas production is actively promoted.

New Wincup Holdings Inc. is a privately-held premier manufacturer and distributor of single-use EPS foodservice packaging solutions for today's on-the-go needs. Wincup serves overall value through its people, its performance and its product portfolio. The company operates on a mission of constant innovation with a commitment to creating responsible, sustainable products.
