The event takes about one year to plan and organize. Lucia Peregrim, President of the Northeast Pennsylvania Chapter of the National Scoliosis Foundation and organizer for Sound for Scoliosis explains, "Sound for Scoliosis was originally designed on the basis of bringing an original live music series into the NEPA area via original live music and cover band music into the NEPA area while raising money for a good cause. The event was created for two reasons. One, I have had the disease since the age of 13 , and now is the time that I am giving back to the community via early detection programs so that others don't have to go through what I did. Two, what is better than bringing your local music acts together for a great cause because there is no awareness for scoliosis."
Sunday, July 31 is survivor day with scoliosis treatment patients that have overcome obstacles with scoliosis speaking. Speakers include Joseph O'Brien, President and CEO of the National Scoliosis Foundation and Lucia Peregrim, President of Northeast Pennsylvania Chapter of the National Scoliosis Foundation. Dr. Clayton Stitzel will be speaking at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, July 31 on behalf of the CLEAR Institute, a non-profit group from Minnesota that offers a non-surgical and non-bracing treatment for scoliosis patients. Dr. Stitzel is a chiropractor in Lititz, Pennsylvania (Lancaster county, Pennsylvania).

Scoliosis affects about 3 percent of the population, about 6 million people. Scoliosis occurs more often in women than men. When the spine of the back forms a C or an S shaped curve this is scoliosis. A few symptoms of scoliosis are back pain, hip pain, leg pain, shoulders that are uneven, and in severe cases digestive symptoms and difficult breathing (the unusual spinal curve places pressure on digestive system and interferes with the way the lungs inflate). Most cases of scoliosis are diagnosed with persons' ages 11 to 18 years at a back to school physical or sports physical. About 88 percent of all cases of scoliosis are idiopathic (unknown cause). There are now alternatives to scoliosis brace treatment and scoliosis surgery that are non-invasive.
Sound for Scoliosis is an annual rock charity show founded in 2009 by Lucia Peregrim. The future focus of Sound for Scoliosis involves fund raisers at Scranton area venues via various arts and music.
