ATLANTA, GA, June 22, 2011 (Press-News.org) It's 90 degrees in the shade in Atlanta and that can only mean one thing: Red Baron's annual Summer Extravaganza is right around the corner. This year's event is slated for the weekend of July 16-17, at Red Baron's massive gallery facility, located at 6450 Roswell Road in Atlanta. Red Baron's Antiques is the premier auction house of the Southeast.
Hundreds of treasures gathered from around the world will cross the block that weekend, in a variety of categories: fine artwork, vintage automobiles, music memorabilia, architectural antiques, weaponry, glorious stained glass pieces, unusual gaming devices, and all manner of wild and rare objects. The action will get underway at 9 a.m. both days.
"We have more bars than the Great Golden Movement auction of the 1980s," said Bob Brown of Red Baron. "We have more pool tables, game room furnishings and slot machines than the Roy Arrington Victorian Casino auctions of the 1990s. And we've got more furniture, more collectibles, more lighting and more food, fun and excitement that anywhere else in the world."
Mr. Brown added, "We're the only place you can find a Tiffany window, a monumental mantel or fountain, and a marching band all under the same roof. We've got what you're looking for and what you never knew you wanted. But the catch is you've got to be here in person. So grab a friend or a group of friends and make it out to Atlanta for a weekend of treasure hunting."
The sale will feature some great stained and leaded glass, to include an excellent five-piece arch-top window set cased in a large oak frame, with the original hardware. Pulled from the George Westinghouse estate and attributed to Rudy Brothers, the magnificent set is 92 inches tall by 116 inches wide. It boasts multi-tonal greens and mild hues of orange, red and yellow.
You want rare and unusual? How about a "heart-attack chair," used during initiations and private ceremonies of secret orders and societies? The chair is so-named because when a person sat in it and a mechanism was triggered, a .32 caliber blank fired. If the person in the chair got spooked and jumped, they were kicked out of the group. It instantly excluded unwanted people.
Moving from the sublime to the unusual, the auction will also feature a 1981 Citroen Mini CV2 dual car. The driver had the option of either driving it from one side as a car or the other side as a motorcycle. Is that sheer genius, or what? The vehicle was highly publicized in England when first introduced, and the example to be sold is red and in remarkable condition.
From the vintage weaponry category, an expected star lot is a rare, one-of-a-kind .30 caliber Winchester rifle in its presentation case. What makes the piece so unique is that it was ordered by the president of Italy, who then presented it to the president of Peru. You can't top that for provenance. And it's a beautiful rifle, with intricately carved ram head and foliate detail.
Also set to cross the block is a fully restored, pre-World War II Allan Herschell carousel, massive at 36 feet in diameter, and a rare and unusual guillotine cigar cutter with an engraved base. At one time, the item graced the counter of a fine tobacco shop. It stands 9 inches tall.
Just a few of the over 50 awesome automobiles to be offered will be a black Jaguar XK-E convertible; a white 1963 BMW 700 convertible with blue and white interior; a 1997 Ferrari 355 convertible, red with full ostrich interior and $10,000 stereo system; a 1970 Volkswagen "Back to Berkeley" microbus, red inside and out; a 1963 Corvette Stingray convertible, red, with hard and soft tops; a 1973 Fiat Giardiniera station wagon; and a white 1985 Zimmer Golden Spirit.
For the musically inclined, the auction will feature a guitar signed by Jimi Hendrix after a concert performance, a very rare 1958 Flying V guitar, a Voss electric guitar, an unusual Gibson period jazz guitar (first generation), and a restored Seeburg Model 100 "Happy Days" jukebox.
For those looking to equip a game room, the auction will have a pair of rare and small coin-operated pool tables, a 25-cent Grand Slam Baseball slot machine, a 25-cent Golden Nugget slot machine, a 25-cent Mills Cherry slot machine, a one-of-a-kind double-decker modern motorcycle-style bar, and a restored Mills Upright Dewey slot machine made circa 1908.
Previews will be held Monday through Friday, July 11-16, from 9-6. There will be no Internet bidding for this sale, but phone and absentee bids will be accepted. For folks coming in from out of town, a block of rooms has been reserved at the Crown Plaza Ravinia in Atlanta (ph: 770-551-6113). Another excellent hotel is the Ritz-Carlton Buckhead (ph: 404-237-2700).
A buyer's premium of 18.5 percent on top of the successfully bid price will be added, payable by the buyer as part of the total purchase price. All lots sold are subject to a 7 percent Georgia sales tax, unless a resale number is given. Terms of payment are cash, certified check or personal check with a bank letter. For a free full color catalog, please call (404) 252-3770.
Red Baron is always in the hunt for quality merchandise for future sales. If you have an item, estate or collection to be considered, you may call them directly, at (404) 252-3770.
