Ndola Lime Company: Producing Quick Lime for the Construction Industry in Zambia with Construction Digital

SAN DIEGO, CA, June 25, 2011 (Press-News.org) Ndola Lime Company was originally founded on 10th January 1931 as the Northern Rhodesia Lime Company, following an agreement between the Rhokana Corporation and engineer John Owen Wallen. Initial lime burning trials were carried out in wood fired, hollowed-out Anthills at Misundu in 1931. The results were good and this led to the construction of underground pot kilns. A second quarry was opened in the late 1930s at Chipulukusu before the company moved to its present location at Mwatesi in 1962.

In 1973 a new rotary kiln was commissioned and 1986 an annular vertical kiln capable of producing 500 tonnes per day was commissioned to cater for increased demand of lime especially at the Tailing Leach Plant in Chingola. Ndola Lime Company is wholly owned by ZCCM Investment Holdings, a parastatal holdings company via which Zambia's government maintains its active interest in the country's mining and closely related heavy industry.

The company produces quick lime, hydrated lime, flat stone, aggregates and concrete blocks and operates within a number of industry sectors. "Quick lime and hydrated lime equates to about 85 percent of our revenue," reveals Ndola Lime Company's General Manager, Abraham Witika. "Our products are mainly used in the mining industry but they are also used in the construction sector, in the food industry and also in the water and sanitation sector."
