Combat Gets Medieval On Gamers June 30 With The Beta Release Of Ethereal - Medieval Skirmish Warfare

University Students Train in Medieval Combat to Prepare For Development of Indie Game

2011-06-25
SAN FRANCISCO, CA, June 25, 2011 (Press-News.org) Project Ethereal, an independent game development team from Carnegie Mellon University, today announced the upcoming Beta for their first game, Ethereal - Medieval Skirmish Warfare. Originally a student-pitched project at Carnegie Mellon University, Ethereal - Medieval Skirmish Warfare combines medieval fighting techniques with unique online game design to evoke emergent behavior similar to Counter-Strike. The Beta version of the game is scheduled for release on FilePlanet on June 30, with the final version coming later in the summer.

"The first thing we did was train in medieval combat techniques with the Society for Creative Anachronism to learn how fighters handled swords, pikes, shields and armor," said Mark Piszczor from Project Ethereal. "Eventually, we participated in large-scale combat reenactments in order to experience first hand the chaos of a medieval battle. That experience influenced nearly every decision we made in the development process."

Ethereal - Medieval Skirmish Warfare is a medieval combat action game that takes the traditional round-based combat game style and replaces guns and Kevlar with swords and armor. The game combines offensive weapons and defensive armor strategy in a fast-paced gameplay founded in real medieval combat techniques to create an experience of presence on the medieval frontlines. The key to survival on this battlefield will be cooperation and teamwork. With four levels of immediate replayability, Ethereal aims to entertain hardcore gamers interested in gritty, high-action gameplay and physical combat.

About Project Ethereal
Project Ethereal began as a student-pitched project at Carnegie Mellon University's Entertainment Technology Center. The goal of the project is to create a realistic and accessible medieval combat game experience, while operating similar to an independent game development studio and parlaying student loans as development costs. The team consists of nine members with varied technical, art and production experience, as well as great love for the medieval era.
