In late April, when corporate tax preparer Loretta Rivers of JK Harris & Company spoke with one of her clients who had been directly impacted by the tornado in Alabama, it troubled her deeply. He told her that people in Alabama were having trouble getting simple supplies in the days after the devastating storms struck the state."My client told me it was difficult to get some of the things we all take for granted, like garbage bags and rakes to begin the massive clean up process...to begin getting his life back in order," said Ms. Rivers. "I knew JK Harris has been involved in other fundraisers and thought there might be a small way we could contribute to the recovery efforts in Alabama and in other areas affected by recent storms."
That's when JK Harris' volunteer committee came up with the idea of contacting a local restaurant to see if they would be willing to donate a portion of one day's sales to benefit the American Red Cross' disaster relief services fund. They contacted James Nease of TJ's Beef & Brew in Goose Creek.
"When I was contacted by JK Harris, I thought the idea of a fundraiser was a great idea," said Nease. "I have done things like this at other places I have worked and I was very excited about the prospect of working with one of our neighboring businesses to benefit the victims of the recent storms."
On Friday, June 17th, Nease agreed to donate 5% of all food sales for the day to benefit the American Red Cross. JK Harris helped by assisting in promoting the event and encouraging its staff to get out of the office and go to TJ's for lunch or dinner. In conjunction with the TJ's event, JK Harris is also taking up donations for Community2Community; a non-profit group that takes in donations after disasters and helps victims get back on their feet faster. Donation boxes are located in the reception area of their offices at 208 St. James Avenue in Goose Creek and they will be collecting items until June 30, 2011. A list of items Community2Community is in need of is located on their website at http://www.supportc2c.com/whatweneed/.
