DALLAS, TX, August 19, 2011 (Press-News.org) Garfield Traub's Durham Performing Arts Center (DPAC) development is gaining a lot of media attention lately with its major role in the renovation of downtown Durham into a flourishing destination with an array of restaurants, shopping and entertainment venues. Although a few were openly skeptical of the project in the past, many of those same people are now changing their criticism and turning it to praise of the development instead.
"We are proud of what DPAC has accomplished for the redevelopment of Durham," said Garfield Traub Principal Greg Garfield. "Durham's downtown dining and shopping experience has been greatly enhanced by the DPAC, and we at Garfield Traub are glad that we had the opportunity to contribute."
In addition to improving the flourishing downtown Durham "scene", the Durham Performing Arts Center is also setting records and creating a lot of press. Some of that press is even coming in the form of retraction of criticism by the local media.
One local correspondent wrote in a July article entitled, "DPAC: Proof is in the profit," that he retracts his 2007 statement that the Durham City Council was "digging itself into yet another financial hole" with the development and now states, "bully for all the people who gave life to DPAC. You have a big, brassy hit on your hands. It couldn't have happened to a more deserving burg."
In a recent article in The New York Times Travel section the development of the Durham Performing Arts Center was attributed to being an integral part of Durham's success. And to top it off, trade publication Pollstar announced DPAC as ranking second nationally in theater attendance for the first quarter. With competing theaters such as those in like Los Angeles and New York City, this is a huge honor for Durham.
The DPAC operator confirms that the design of the Durham Performing Arts Center ensures there isn't a bad seat in the house. The design is what keeps popular performances such as Broadway favorites Billy Elliot, RENT and Wicked, comedians and actors Al Pacino, and Bill Cosby and musical acts such as B.B. King and Leonard Cohen booked and why attendance is so high. It is this high attendance that has attracted so many businesses to the area so that they too can get in on the benefits from the many customers the theater attracts.
"Garfield Traub was instrumental in the planning for the DPAC," said Alan DeLisle, Assistant City Manager for Economic and Workforce Development (2002 - 2009). "The City of Durham has benefited greatly from their leadership and expertise in this process."
