BOCA RATON, FL, September 22, 2010 (Press-News.org) In hard economic times, investors and non-investors alike try to find ways to improve their monetary standing and increase their wealth, often through various international outlets. Offshore investments have become increasingly popular due to the high-reward potential with the returns.
While offshore investing used to be limited to the extremely wealthy, the advent of the Internet has allowed for normal middle class citizens to also take part in international investing. While that has helped many people succeed in increasing their net worth, there has also been a sharp rise in the amount of scams, due to this additional exposure.
There are a few things to remember when you are thinking of potentially investing in a venture outside of the U.S. First, double check the tax laws and what would be owed on any returns you receive. Many scams will say that the returns are "tax free", but you typically will owe money to the IRS or a similar agency based off of the type of returns you receive. You also need to make sure you're investing in a reputable international organization, so double check with a country's business union or an outside party to verify legitimacy.
Also remember that offshore investing is high risk. The potential in getting involved in an investing scam is exponentially higher than if a domestic investment was made through a well known brokerage firm, so use every resource at your disposal to make sure the investment is sound. World Progress Report hopes to provide comprehensive educational content for Public Television that deals directly with these issues.
