FRANCETOWN, NH, October 10, 2011 (Press-News.org) More than 54% of all small business in the US are home businesses. That's according to recent US Census Bureau statistics, and recent studies show that the number is climbing with more than one million new solo entrepreneurs working from home in 2010.
Paula Eder, a Solo-E.com Certified Expert, is celebrating this as part of National Home-Based Business Week (the third week in October).
"Home-based businesses are everywhere in the US: urban, suburban, and rural settings alike. But even in this day and age, there are tons of misconceptions about people who work from home," says Paula Eder, a home based professional who focuses on mentoring solopreneurs and small business owners as they navigate the time management challenges that confront them every day.
"Probably the most common myth has to do with not really being serious about business. I am here to say that's absolutely not true."
Eder's business, Finding Time, helps spirit-driven solopreneurs and small business owners align their core values and energy with their time choices and behaviors so that they can make more money, create more freedom, and find more time. Eder is one of 50 solo professionals certified by Solo-E.com. She has been running her on-line business since 2006, and her coaching business for more than 35 years - both from her home.
"Solo-E.com certification allows Paula to stand out from the rest and helps solo entrepreneurs know that they are working with someone who is considered an established expert in their field," ," says Terri Zwierzynski, CEO and founder of Solo-E.com. "These home-based experts are very serious about growing a business that works with their lifestyle."
Together, Zwierzynski and Eder offer the following tips to create a profitable home-based business:
1. Understand that this is a career choice. "In order to build a successful business, you need to treat it like a business - not like a vacation from your old job," Eder says. "That means you need to create work hours, pay schedules, and other structures and boundaries ... and stick with them!"
2. Know who your target market is and how to reach them. "Without knowing exactly who your customer is, you won't make a dime. It's that simple," explains Zwierzynski.
3. Recognize it isn't easy. "You need courage and determination to make your business succeed," Eder says. "Even when things get tough - and they will - you need to keep a positive attitude or become one of the thousands of businesses that close within a year of opening."
4. "It's key to make sure that your business aligns with your values," Eder adds. "Do what you are passionate about, and you'll find wellsprings of energy that will help keep you on course and motivated when times get tough."
5. "And don't forget to celebrate your successes!" Eder says with a smile. "You need to be your own best cheerleader. You will be amazed at how that helps - and how, as an added benefit, it deepens and warms your own relationship with yourself ... and others."
"Working from a home business is a dream come true for many Americans," says Zwierzynski. "The freedom it offers is fantastic but it does take hard work and persistence."
