Local Firm Arranges Tour To Remember For Word War Two Veterans

Luton, Beds: A new Luton-based firm has successfully completed a tour to remember for a number of World War Two veterans with a VIP trip to Singapore and Thailand.

2011-12-21
December 21, 2011 (Press-News.org) Luton, Beds: A new Luton-based firm has successfully completed a tour to remember for a number of World War Two veterans with a VIP trip to Singapore and Thailand.

Treating the vets to the trip of a lifetime, WWII Heritage Tours secured exclusive entry into the Singapore "British Club" - an international institution usually frequented by Heads of State and Royalty - and an all expenses paid trip to the world famous Raffles for the soldiers and their partners.

The average age of the veterans making the trip to Singapore and Thailand was 90, making it all the more important that their visit was as memorable as possible. John Babbage, the founder and managing director of WWII Heritage Tours organized the tour. He said, "We decided to make this trip as memorable as possible for the veterans/wives and their siblings. We were conscious of the fact that the chances of these fine esteemed gentlemen returning again were quite slim.

"Our pre tour efforts involved spending weeks on extensive and exhaustive letter writing/ PR, as well as pleas for cooperation from sympathetic ex pats. The result was a genuinely unique tour which was enjoyed by all."

As part of the pre-trip preparations, WWII Heritage Tours located the Wanderers Rugby Club in Singapore. Made up of ex-pat workers, the Rugby Club provided a luxury 42 seat coach for the veterans use along with the trip to Raffles, including all expenses paid and the finest champagne. The Wanderers Rugby Club also arranged an afternoon at the Singapore British Club. Normally reserved for the Royal Family and other heads of state, the British Club gave their exclusive rooftop lounge over to the Veterans for their sole use.

The icing on the cake for many of the veterans was a trip to the British Embassy and a memorial service alongside the Ghurkhas. The British Defence Advisor gave the veterans from the World War II Heritage tour special guest status, inviting them to his superb colonial style residence for supper and drinks.

WWII Heritage Tours offers a number of World War Two tours, with upcoming trips to Central and Eastern Europe and Asia and Pacific for those interested in history and students keen to learn more about the period. The company also offers specialist veteran's memorial tours, designed to assist and enable veterans to make a poignant return to their battlegrounds. Ted Cachart, ex 49 Squadron (Lancaster) aircrew W/O Wop/Ag, the youngest ever B/C crew member and a former prisoner of war assists and advises on the memorial tours.
