LOS ANGELES, CA, January 01, 2012 (Press-News.org) The 13th Annual Rock 'n Retail/Web 'n Retail Children's Hospital LA Holiday CD/DVD Drive brought in over $30,000 worth of CD's and DVD's which was a 55% increase over the 2010 drive.
Per Gale Rosenberg, President of Rock 'n Retail, LLC / Web 'n Retail, "This year's drive got off to a very slow start even 2 weeks after the initial announcements were emailed. So, we reached out again to all the Companies that had donated over the past years, and the donations started rolling in. With only 12 independent distributors/labels/promotion groups donating this year, we still realized an increase over last year by approximately 2,000 units. That was quite the feat, since we were without any major distributors/labels/promotion group donations for the first time since the drive began 13 years ago.
We are incredibly grateful to the many companies that donated including 6/8 Records LLC, CMH Records/Rockabye Baby, Craig 'N Co, Fearless Records, Inception Music, Indienink Music, MDI Distribution, Musical Kids LLC, Marvelous Media, Shout Factory, The Royal Promotoin Group and Tinderbox Music" .
Merchandise donated included such artists/products as Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, Cher, Alice Cooper, Blink 182, The Maine, and a lot of top notch children's product, to name just a few of the quality titles.
Gale Rosenberg became involved in providing entertainment for the patients at the Hospital when her less then 20 month old niece, Paige, was diagnosed with a Neuroblastoma. Neuroblastomas comprise 15% of cancer deaths in children and generally manifest in children under the age of 2. She was rushed into surgery and her prognosis for survival was not good. The Doctors said that if she did survive, her future would be compromised. They removed 16 Lymph Nodes and one Adrenal gland.
"Paige is truly a miracle; she is now 16 years old and just starting driving! She has been off all medications for many years and she leads a completely normal, wonderful life. While spending so many hours at the hospital I spoke with many young cancer patients, some that had not left the hospital in several years. Most all of them had personal CD players that had been donated, but they had only 1 or 2 CD's to idle away the time. Now, some of the rooms have DVD players in them as well" states Rosenberg.
Per Wendy Kellaris, Director of Volunteer Services for Children's Hospital L.A. "The positive impact of music, books and other entertainment of this type cannot be measured. It is therapeutic, soothing and healing. We give our many thanks to Rock 'n Retail for their 13 years of support to Children's Hospital."
"Donations made during the Holiday season make up 80% of our yearly donations. We use these donations all year round. The patients get a gift every week while in the hospital as well as an additional gift for birthdays, recovery from operations, traumatic events, etc. We distribute 70,000 gifts yearly and must rely on the generosity of the Community to help us accomplish this very important task. Patients are fortunate to have such excellent Doctors and Nurses taking care of them, but sometimes the most important thing for them is the knowledge that people outside our walls care about them as well" states Kellaris.

Before sounding an alarm, chimps consider their audience
2012-01-02
It's a basic rule of effective communication: Consider your audience. According to a new report published online on December 29 in Current Biology, a Cell Press publication, that rule of thumb is not lost on wild chimpanzees. Chimps are more likely to make an alarm call about the presence of a snake when others in the group are unaware of the apparent danger they face, the new evidence shows.
The findings suggest that chimpanzees keep track of the information available to other chimpanzees and make selective decisions about the messages they convey based on that understanding. ...
