Sweet Leda Nominated for Tri State Indie Music Award
2012-01-11
CATONSVILLE, MD, January 11, 2012 (Press-News.org) As if 2011 wasn't successful enough, in December, Annapolis, MD-based neo-soul band, Sweet Leda, was nominated for MD/DC Band/Artist of The Year in the 1st Annual Tri State Indie Music Awards. Hosted by Tri State Indie, an organization that serves as a network for indie musicians by providing fans with music news, show announcements, show coverage, and a social media community, the awards program seeks to recognize the best in regional talent.

Sweet Leda earned its nomination by continuing to tear up the Mid-Atlantic music scene throughout 2011. Not only did the band release its first full-length album, "Need the Music", which debuted at a sold-out album release show and has sold more than 2,000 copies, but later in the year, the band was featured in the end title credits of "Lovely Molly", a film by Eduardo Sanchez ("The Blair Witch Project"), which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival.

Comprised of vocalist Julie Cymek, bassist Jaime Horrigan, guitarist Omar El Dieahy, and drummer Don Boyette, the band launched a new website, released a promo video, played shows up and down the East Coast at venues from Pennsylvania to North Carolina, and expanded its fan base by sharing stages at shows and festivals with the likes of Robert Randolph, Lyle Lovett, Keb' Mo', Tedeschi Trucks, Big Head Todd, Indigenous, and many more.

"Things just keep getting better and more exciting! I am overjoyed," says vocalist Cymek. "The nomination was a great surprise. Winning, of course, would be killer, but we are just flattered to even have been considered!"

Grace Potter and The Nocturnals, Fitz and The Tantrums, Dawes, and My Morning Jacket are a few of the other bands that received nominations.

Winners in each category are chosen by fans, who have the opportunity to place their votes by visiting www.tristateindie.com/tsi-awards-vote/ until February 19th. One week later, on February 26, the Tri State Music Awards Ceremony will take place in Philadelphia, PA, at World Cafe Live.

About Sweet Leda
Based in Annapolis, MD, Sweet Leda is "one of the tightest bands on the [Annapolis] circuit" (Carrie Neuman, WRNR). With its rich blend of new school funk, soul, and pop, and Julie Cymek's distinct Adele meets Mary J. Blige meets Janis Joplin meets Joss Stone style vocals, the band has earned its very own stylistic label -"sexy, smooth rock and groove" - that leaves audiences wanting to sink their teeth right in and take a nice, big, juicy bite.

Scientists look to microbes to unlock Earths deep secrets
2012-01-11
Of all the habitable parts of our planet, one ecosystem still remains largely unexplored and unknown to science: the igneous ocean crust. This rocky realm of hard volcanic lava exists beneath ocean sediments that lie at the bottom of much of the world's oceans. While scientists have estimated that microbes living in deep ocean sediments may represent as much as one-third of Earth's total biomass, the habitable portion of the rocky ocean crust may be 10 times as great. Yet biologists know very little about this ecosystem. The Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) ...
