MALAGA, SPAIN, February 24, 2012 (Press-News.org) Dubai-based luxury hotel chain Jumeirah has hand-picked the island of Mallorca for its first foray into Spain. Officially opening in Port Soller on 13 March 2012, the Company has designs on this 120-room five star hotel becoming the most luxurious hotel in the country. Local estate agent Mallorca Sotheby's International Realty believes Jumeirah has made an excellent choice.
"Mallorca is a very enchanting and elite Island," says Mallorca Sotheby's International Realty's Managing Director Stephen Dight, "Its physical beauty and Mediterranean climate have attracted a stream of royalty, celebrity, wealthy expats and artists since the nineteenth century. Today, despite the mammoth number of visitors passing through the Airport - almost 23 million in 2011, quality still prevails over quantity and Jumeirah will be joining an already impressive line-up of five star hotels and services."
Whilst perhaps the vibrant capital, Palma, or the chic southwest region home to such jewels such Puerto Portals and Port Andratx, may have been more obvious settings, Stephen believes that Port Soller is a serious contender for a luxury location. "Port Soller surrounds a very handsome horseshoe-shape bay with a long fishing tradition and attracts a well-heeled clientele ideally suited to Jumeirah. It is also the final destination for one of Mallorca's most popular attractions, the 1912-inaugurated timber-panelled train which still operates a daily service in and out of Palma. Taking just over an hour with a 20 minute tram connecting the Soller town and the Port, this is an incredible way to view the stunning Mallorcan countryside. Port Soller is a more than justified setting for Jumeirah."
Reported to have cost 120 to 150 million euros, working out at one million euros per room, the Jumeirah Port Soller Hotel & Spa is set atop a cliff overlooking the bay. More than half the 120 rooms and suites decked out in local and Spanish art have a breathtaking Mediterranean view whilst the rest look across the craggy Serra de Tramuntana mountains which were placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in June of last year. Rooms and speciality suites will embrace the latest technology including plasma screen TVs and guests can choose from a range of oils to fragrance the room alongside locally sourced fruit and wine.
Spead across 11 white cube-shaped buildings and surrounded by perfumed pines, the Jumeirah Port Soller Hotel & Spa will include a 2,200m² Talise Spa with ten treatment suites making use of local olive oil, lemons, oranges and almonds, a state-of-the-art gymnasium, Jumeirah Ballroom for celebrations, several meeting rooms, a children's club, three swimming pools of which two are heated and five restaurants and bars including the speciality Cap Roig seafood restaurant.
The local area is a paradise for artists, photographers, mountain bikers and keen walkers who can tackle 120km of coastal tracks through pines, orange and olive groves. This northwestern coastline is also ideal for canyoning and more leisurely cruising by private yacht charter dropping anchor in secluded coves characterised by snorkel-friendly intense turquoise waters. Plenty of Mallorca's 22 immaculate golf courses are also within easy reach for hotel guests with a penchant for swinging a club on holiday. Nearby Soller town retains its authenticity and traditions with a wide selection of artisan shops, bars, restaurants and a must-visit fresh produce and arts and crafts market on Saturday.
The Jumeirah Port Soller Hotel & Spa forms part of a wider expansion plan by the hotelier which hopes to almost double the number of hotels under management for Jumeirah in a 14 month period. Mallorca aside, new destinations for the group include Bali, Frankfurt, the Maldives, Shanghai, Kuwait and Azerbaijan.
