TAMPA, FL, February 29, 2012 (Press-News.org) Rhinoplasty is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures in the world. Even in countries where body contouring and breast augmentation are taboo, rhinoplasty is remarkably popular. In the US, it is also one of the top five most popular procedures. But some people may be concerned about how long it will take for the results of their surgery to become visible.
Short-Term Recovery
Immediately after your rhinoplasty, you will see some results. Your nose will likely be swollen, and there may be swelling and bruising around your nose, especially under your eyes. Visible swelling and bruising will take several weeks to resolve, though after the first week you can wear concealing makeup as necessary to feel comfortable going about your routine.
At this point, you will notice the difference between your nose before surgery and after. Changes such as the width of your nostrils, the slope of the nose, and reshaping the tip will likely be the first to become visible.
Swelling and Final Results
Other, subtler changes, may take longer to be visible, and all the changes in your nose will continue to refine even after you begin to notice a difference. Swelling is the main factor here, and can make you think that your nose has not been changed as much as you would like. Some things, like removing a hump in the bridge, are notorious for taking a long time to finalize. The goal is to remove tissue, but when tissue is removed, the remaining tissue can swell, negating the effect.
How long will swelling last? That depends on many factors, but it is likely that swelling after rhinoplasty will last several months, and it may take up to a year for full results to be visible. Rhinoplasty recovery can be highly variable.
Factors That Lengthen Your Time to Final Results
There are several factors that can lengthen the time until you see the final results of your rhinoplasty. These can include:
- Not taking the time of for recovery
- Not following postoperative instructions
- Injury or blow to the nose after surgery
- Illness or infection during recovery
If you experience any of these it will likely lengthen your time to final results, putting you closer to the one year timeline rather than six months.
During your consultation with your plastic surgeon, you will be briefed about when to expect final results for your rhinoplasty, and how it is impacted by the type of rhinoplasty you are having.
