BOCA RATON, FL, March 01, 2012
Gentle Dental Group, http://www.GentleDentalGroup.com, is excited to announce its partnership with the Epilepsy Foundation of Florida to host two South Florida events to raise awareness and money to support epilepsy research. Many people are unaware of the correlation between oral health and epilepsy, but it is very real. To raise awareness about the issue of epilepsy and dental health, Gentle Dental will be supporting the Epilepsy Foundation of Florida in two South Florida events this year. The Epilepsy Foundation of Florida will host the 2012 âEURœWalk the TalkâEUR walk-a-thons to be held on April 15, 2012 at Hollywood Beach (3601 N. Ocean Drive, Hollywood) and April 21, 2012 at John D. MacArthur Beach State Park (10900 A1A, North Palm Beach)
While the subject of dental health should concern everyone, it is of particular importance to the three (3) million Americans who suffer from epilepsy. Both seizure and anti-seizure medications can render devastating effects to the oral health of a person with epilepsy. These negative effects include:
Chipped and broken teeth
Irritated gums
Periodontal Disease
Gingival Hypertrophy (over grown gums)
Bleeding gums
Xerostomia (dry mouth)
Postoperative bleeding
Susceptibility to oral infections, such as canker sores and lesions
Epilepsy is the third most common neurological disorder in the United States. About as many people have epilepsy as have cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson' s disease combined.
"Gentle Dental is a proud sponsor of the Epilepsy Foundation of Florida," explains Dr. Neil Ziegler. "If you have a loved one who suffers from epilepsy, the time to educate yourself about epilepsy and dental health is now. We look forward to raising awareness and money for people who suffer from Epilepsy through our sponsorship of these South Florida Walk-the-Talk events."
