SCOTTSDALE, AZ, March 15, 2012 (Press-News.org) SciPreneur, an enrichment program that fuses science and entrepreneurship education for kids, is taking camp one step further this summer. Camp 4 a Cause, the brainchild of Melissa Rose and Sherri "Miss Science" Smith Dodgson, will add an element of social entrepreneurship to the mix by showing kids how to use their time and talents to help further a cause or better their community.
"Gen Z kids are very aware of social woes and many have a heartfelt interest to make the world a better place to live," says Rose, co-owner of SciPreneur and president of Biz in a Boxx. "They truly believe their efforts will make an impact."
Camp 4 a Cause will offer traditional educational activities such as dance, robotics, music, sports, arts and crafts and science, along with SciPreneur's Slimeology and Lemonology. Each camp program will concentrate on science and entrepreneurship while encouraging kids to think outside the box to create a product or service that can be used to make people's lives better.
"We don't stop at teaching kids how to make a robot from a LEGO Mindstorms toolkit. We want them to start critically thinking beyond that and ask themselves, How can I use this knowledge to make something practical and beneficial for people to use?" says Smith Dodgson, co-owner of SciPreneur and founder of Discover Science 4 Kids.
Camp 4 a Cause will run in Scottsdale, AZ from June 4-15, 2012 at the Scottsdale Neighborhood Arts Place. For more information on Camp 4 a Cause, visit the website at http://www.SciPreneur.org.
SciPreneur originated in 2010 as a way to get young girls interested in science by showing them the relevancy of their coursework and how it relates to the world around them through entrepreneurship. The program, which is used in and out of the school setting, combines curriculum developed by Discover Science 4 Kids, http://www.discoverscience4kids.com and Biz in a Boxx, http://www.bizinaboxx.com. The after school enrichment programs called, The Ologies, have been developed for elementary students and include science and entrepreneurship themes involving sugar, plastics, germs, gases, minerals, art and food. SciPreneur's middle school curriculum focuses on plastics, solar energy, food and household consumables. All of SciPreneur's curriculum aligns with the common core standards, 21st century skills and career and technical education.
