DENVER, CO, April 13, 2012 (Press-News.org) Today, Une Belle Vie Memorial Urns, LLC, announced the expansion of their line of fully biodegradable urns as the funeral industry takes massive steps towards no flame cremations.
No flame cremations, or resomation, is the process where the body is broken down chemically using a method called alkaline hydrolysis. Currently, there are only a few funeral homes is the U.S. that conduct resomation.
"Many people don't realize that with resomation, you still have a small amount of cremains," said Melody Jamali, president of Une Belle Vie Memorial Urns. "If you are going to this level of commitment to help the environment, it is only natural to house those cremains in a fully biodegradable urn."
Une Belle Vie's expanded line of biodegradable urns can last for quite some time in a temperature-controlled environment, but in water or buried, they completely biodegrade in a short amount of time.
Une Belle Vie's current collection of biodegradable urns ranges from traditional-shaped cremation urns made of clay, organic proteins and sand, to wooden boxes void of toxic finishes and plastic or metal hinges. Une Belle Vie also has a selection of simple, baked clay vessels. They are available in a variety of sizes, for both humans and pets, and range in price from $60-$205.
Resomation is currently approved in 17 states. The process uses less energy and releases no carbon into the air. Also, in the traditional cremation process, mercury from dental fillings is released into the air. Although the demand for environmentally friendly funerals is significantly growing, resomation is lagging largely due to the high cost of the machine.
