Kai Goulbourne is only eleven years old, but his life could be cut short if a matching bone marrow donor is not found soon.

2012-04-24
MISSISSAUGA, ON, April 24, 2012 (Press-News.org) Kai Goulbourne is only eleven years old, but his life could be cut short if a matching bone marrow donor is not found soon.

He was originally diagnosed in December of 2009, when his mom Shelley and Dad noticed, that despite having a healthy appetite, he appeared to be losing weight. Testing and examinations revealed an enlarged spleen, and he was diagnosed as having Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia.

It is largely a genetic disorder where the white blood cells proliferate out of the bone marrow where they are formed to enter into the blood stream.

Kai was treated with a drug known as Gleevec that was developed by Novartis. It has shown much promise in treating certain types of cancers. It was approved by the Food and Drug Administration a few years ago as a new class of drugs that inhibit the formation of enzymes in certain cancer cells, to prevent further growth.

There were some concerns about the longer term effects of the medication for Kai who was responding positively to the treatments until February of 2012, when the cancer returned as Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia or (ALL). With ALL, the bone marrow makes abnormal and unregulated cells, called blasts that cannot fight infections as they normally would which leads to overpowering the number of red blood cells that are needed for transporting oxygen to various parts of the body. It is a fast growing cancer, as the number of abnormal cells can multiply at a relatively fast rate. Without the proper amount of oxygen going through the body, a person can easily become susceptible to contracting diseases, accompanied by a feeling of being fatigued and short of breath.

Kai is being treated at the Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto, but has suffered some serious setbacks and complications, and the disease is progressing. He has suffered two seizures and kidney failure, and help is needed immediately. Family and friends have set up a website for donations and to raise awareness.

The Goulbourne family is seeking an 80% bone marrow donor match or better by May 3rd, 2012. The matching donor would be compensated for their assistance in helping to save Kai Goulbourne's young life.
