What to Expect after a DUI

ORLANDO, FL, May 02, 2012 (Press-News.org) Getting arrested for driving under the influence (DUI) is a terrible experience. However, getting convicted of a DUI can be even worse. When you are first pulled over, you may have to perform humiliating roadside tests or take a breathalyzer. If your blood alcohol content is above .08, you will be arrested.

When you get to the detention facility, you will be booked and given a blood test. This test determines the actual level of alcohol in your blood and will be used against you in future criminal proceedings. Depending on how many DUIs you have been arrested for, you may be in jail for 8 or more hours following your arrest.

Once you are released, you will need to get your car out of impound. In some states, your car will be impounded for a minimum number of days, making it impossible to retrieve immediately upon release. Impound fees are often in excess of $500 a day.

As soon as you are able to, you will need to contact DUI attorney. This will be essential in reducing the criminal consequences of your DUI.

Hearings and Conviction

Conviction for a DUI can take two or more hearings. Court costs for these hearings will be included in your final penalties. Laws vary from state to state. Using Florida as an example, here's what you may face:

- License revocation for up to 6 months

Second Offense

- Up to 12 months of jail time
- Up to 30 days of vehicle impoundment
- Up to $2000 in fines
- License revocation for up to 5 years

Third Offense

- Up to 12 months of jail time
- Up to 90 days of vehicle impoundment
- Up to $5000 in fines
- License revocation for up to 10 years

Fourth Offense

- Up to 5 years of jail time
- Minimum fines of $1000 with no upper limit
- Permanent license suspension
