John Sarantos and Rona Yellow Robe will be co-facilitating the "Beginners" workshop this year. John will present his very successful non-musical theory approach while Rona will be under the guidance of her own experience of 10 years of learning and playing. Those who would like to take on this workshop will have a very gentle, fun-loving experience learning Finger Control, Breath Control, Knowing your flute, Basic Notes, and Embellishments such as tonguing and slurring, and much more.

ABOUT JOHN SARANTOS: John Sarantos, world's pre-eminent Native American flute instructor, has facilitated weekend and week-long contemporary Native American flute workshops from coast-to-coast for over 17 years. His introductory, intermediate, advanced and master classes have been available from New York City's prestigious Open Center, national cultural gatherings, intimate flute circles and one-on-one private lessons. For 13 years, he has facilitated with Ken Light and R. Carlos Nakai at the Renaissance of the Native American Flute workshop in Montana. He was the first to receive the prestigious Naja Award from R. Carlos Nakai for his work in promoting the Renaissance of the Native American Flute. In 2006 & 2008 he was a main presenter and performer at the International Native American Flute Association convention. John has performed live in venues large and small; including New York City's Carnegie Hall. A respected educator, John has been accredited and licensed as a K-12 teacher in IL, KY, MI, MN, NY, OR, and WI and has sought to maximize each student's emotional, physical and intellectual growth. In 2012, he became a Director, Board of Directors and one of the Founders of Mighty Achilles Presents, NFP, a not-for-profit public benefit corporation based in Chicago, Illinois which empowers and educates individuals of all ages to discover their creative talents and author the culture of their times. Recognized as a Native flute music historian, John has written six songbooks for the native flute. As a founding member of the New York based flute duo, NightDancers, with Gera Clark; their 2007 debut release, MONTANA CROSSINGS, was nominated for a 2008 Indian Summer Music Award in the Best Native Spirit Recording category. John also has an extensive background in the business of entertainment. He has acted in over 35 commercials, 5 feature films and created, produced and starred in 26 episodes of Mr. Moon's Magic Circus for CBS-TV. He has written, directed and starred in T-Bone's World of Clowning and received the Award of Excellence from the Hollywood Film Advisory Board for Outstanding Achievement in Children's Programming. John appears as a guest artist on the upcoming Robert Lee Revue smooth jazz release entitled, 'City of Smooth Jazz' and has recently joined the award-winning band, Sun Shadows. ABOUT RONA YELLOW ROBE: Leading, award-winning Native American Flutist and vocalist, Rona Yellow Robe, is known for her powerful vocal ability, Native American Flute style and heart filled presence. It is by playing the Native American Flute, which she refers to as "her other voice", that Rona Yellow Robe has become comfortable sharing with all audiences aspects of her life that are personal to her. ABOUT ZION CANYON NATIVE FLUTE SCHOOL: The Zion Canyon Native Flute School is a one-week intensive workshop for people who play (or wish to play) the Native American Flute. It is a chance to deepen our experience with our music in general, and Native Flutes in particular. Flute players of all levels of experience are welcome! We encourage the sounds of all players in a supportive and non-critical environment. The school takes place in the unparalleled beauty of Zion Canyon, and is just South of the entrance to Zion Canyon National Park. Workshop sessions throughout the week focus on building confidence playing the flute in many settings and styles and expressing your inner voice. We believe that expressing yourself though music is as natural a means of communication as speaking, and often more joyful and healthy. We also believe that all people are musical and that each person's level of musicality depends only on their level of experience in music-making. We also believe that participants learn the most when they are actually playing the most. Participants will be playing most of the time! You will get an opportunity to play solo and in ensembles in many settings, and work with facilitators from many different corners of music.
