MIAMI, FL, June 22, 2012 (Press-News.org) ISO 17025-accredited laboratory Beta Analytic will be joining the 22nd Salt Water Intrusion Meeting (SWIM), an informal forum for scientists, engineers, water resource managers and planners, and researchers focused on saline groundwater issues. Operations Manager for Latin America/Iberian Peninsula Martin Tesini will take charge of the lab's tabletop display during the event. SWIM 2012 will be held in Armação dos Búzios in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from June 17-22, 2012.
"This meeting is a great opportunity for us to promote groundwater dating to water resource managers and engineers. Groundwater dating can be used to define aquifer characteristics and predict contamination. Stable aquifer systems show similar radiocarbon dates from year to year. Depletion of supply or contamination of the aquifer from surface waters will directly influence the radiocarbon date. This information is invaluable to the resource manager," Mr. Tesini explains.
Participants will be convening at the Hotel Atlântico Búzios Convention & Resort beginning on June 18 to take part in different sessions, which include:
- New approaches on modeling
- Understanding saline water hydrodynamics in aquifers
- Management of aquifers and salinization prevention, control, and remediation
- Hydrochemical and isotopic methods to study the origin and dynamics of saline groundwater
- Effects of sea level rise and climate change over on salt water interfaces
- Geophysical methods to characterize the distribution and dynamics of saline groundwater
SWIM 2012 is organized by the Geology Department of Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) and the Engineering School of Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE) in cooperation with the Brazilian Groundwater Association (ABAS-RJ) and the Civil Engineering Laboratory of Northern Rio de Janeiro State University (UENF).
Salt Water Intrusion Meetings are held every two years. The first meeting in 1968 was held in Hanover, Germany, and discussed saltwater intrusion in coastal aquifers. In 2006, SWIM merged with the Salt Water Intrusion in Coastal Aquifers (SWICA) group. The new group retained the SWIM name. This year's event is the first SWIM meeting held in Latin America.
