NEW YORK, NY, July 08, 2012 (Press-News.org) The Emerging New York Architects (ENYA) Committee of the AIA NY Chapter is proud to present The Harlem Edge exhibition showcasing ideas of Winning and Selected Entries, from its fifth biennial design ideas competition, The Harlem Edge | Cultivating Connections. The site, located on West 135th Street in the Hudson River, explored the redevelopment of the decommissioned marine transfer station into a community facility. Emerging professionals with less than ten years of experience, including university level students, had the opportunity to creatively consider the possibilities for a multi-modal transit hub and a food and nutrition education facility for Nourishing USA.
Nourishing USA is a not-for-profit 501 (c)(3) community food program that strives to achieve "nutrition for all." Originally launched as Nourishing NYC in East Harlem, they addressed issues of food scarcity and hunger in the poverty-stricken community. As of September 2011, Nourishing USA now serves communities nationwide to alleviate the strong correlation between low-income status and poor dietary health.
By connecting the West Harlem neighborhood to the Hudson River, access to the waterfront could serve as an engine for new kinds of local economic development. The Marine Transfer Station site provided opportunities to investigate urban agriculture/aquaculture in a waterfront location with the operational program of Nourishing USA. The proposed site and program, posed a range of challenges to consider, including community networks, waterfront strategies, and health initiatives.
The winning entries will be exhibited at the Center for Architecture, 536 LaGuardia Place, New York, NY from July-October 2012.
