Red Rabbit Partners with Rosie's Theater Kids to Provide Healthy Lunches and Nutrition Education Classes for Their Summer Camp Kids

With a special grant provided by the Palette Fund, RTKids is now able to offer their participants great-tasting and nutritious meals 5 days a week.

2012-07-10
NEW YORK, NY, July 10, 2012 (Press-News.org) Red Rabbit has partnered with Rosie's Theater Kids, an arts education organization founded by Rosie O'Donnell, dedicated to enriching the lives of underserved children through the arts. With a grant provided by the Palette Fund, Red Rabbit has been serving healthy lunches and snacks to the 155 students at Rosie's Summer Camp Kids. With the Palette's continued support on July 12th, they will host a cooking class for 46 students and on the 13th Red Rabbit will host a Cooking Lab for 42 of the camp's participants. These interactive and hands-on cooking labs teach kids how to make healthy food choices and focus on creating great-tasting, nutritious meals using whole fruits and vegetables.

"We are thrilled that the Palette Fund has joined forces with us to bring Red Rabbit lunches to feed our students every day," stated Lori Klinger, Artistic and Executive Director at Rosie's Theater Kids. "I know that kids will find their own junk food - it's up to us to provide the model of healthy eating that will propel them through life. If in fact we are what we eat, then our students will shine from within at every performance!"

Red Rabbit is a NYC-based healthy school meal provider to the NY metro area. They are committed to helping all educators, parents and kids understand the importance of nutrition, healthy eating and where food comes from. Red Rabbit Cooking Labs are one of the innovative educational programs that Red Rabbit offers to help establish healthy eating habits at not only an early age but at any age.

"Being able to provide all children with access to nutritious and well balanced meals is only part of Red Rabbit's mission," explained Alison Croney, Director of Education at Red Rabbit. "Empowering kids to make healthy food choices daily is just as, if not more, important to the well-being of our children and the nation as a whole."

The Red Rabbit Cooking Lab will be held at The Marvel Arts Center. The labs will be for a group of 7th to12th graders who were provided scholarships by RTKids to attend their 4 week summer camp. Each child in the summer camp was chosen from Rosie's Theater Kids after-school program. RTKids works with schools that have 80% or more of their student population on the free or reduced federal lunch meal program.

What happens when we sunburn

2012-07-09
The biological mechanism of sunburn – the reddish, painful, protective immune response from ultraviolet (UV) radiation – is a consequence of RNA damage to skin cells, report researchers at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine and elsewhere in the July 8, 2012 Advance Online Publication of Nature Medicine. The findings open the way to perhaps eventually blocking the inflammatory process, the scientists said, and have implications for a range of medical conditions and treatments. "For example, diseases like psoriasis are treated by UV light, but ...
