UBON RATCHATHANI, THAILAND, July 11, 2012 (Press-News.org) One of Thailand's oldest cultural events, the Ubon Ratchathani Candle Festival, will return to the south-east Asian nation in the coming weeks.

The celebration will mark its 111th anniversary when it takes place this year in the eastern Thai city of Ubon Ratchathani, which is located in the south-east of the Isan region on the Mun River.

As the area prepares for the Buddhist period of Lent, the men of the region sculpt and mould special candles, which are paraded through the middle of the city on decorative floats.

The procession extends for 1.5 km and takes several hours to pass the main viewing area, a grandstand in the city centre.

This year, the religious festival is set to start on Friday July 20th, when artists from across the Asia-Pacific region and further afield will give demonstrations of wax carving.

Celebrations extend until Sunday August 5th, although the main parade will take place on Friday August 3rd.
