Dallas Pastor Ed Young: Digital Communication Wears Down Intimacy

The Huffington Post reports that digital communication poses a threat to the intimacy of relationships. Ed Young asserts that intimacy is crucial to marriage and encourages couples to enjoy today's technology without sacrificing the relationship.

NEW YORK, NY, July 18, 2012

There is no arguing that digital technology has improved communication; through technological innovations, individuals can share ideas faster and easier than ever before. But it is possible that this ease of communication requires the compromise of the quality of that communication. While the various methods of digital contact--smartphones, instant messaging, etc.--have made life easier, they have simultaneously made it more difficult to forge intimate relationships, according to an article released by The Huffington Post. Dallas pastor Ed Young, a long-time advocate of a high degree of intimacy within a marriage, believes that today's couples must work harder to build strong relationships.

The author of the article writes that today's generation is "sacrificing face-to-face time for quick communication." In doing so, they are compromising the strength of all of their relationships, not just those that are romantic in nature. Ed Young, the founding pastor of Fellowship Church, has issued a press statement.

"Society, today, revolves around instant gratification," Ed Young asserts. "Relationships are facilitated by technology and people have less of an opportunity to get to know one another on a deeper level. Intimacy is the foundation of many a relationship, especially the relationships built between a husband and a wife. Although today's technology has improved a great deal, I sincerely hope that couples remember to take the time to develop the intimacy that technological innovations cannot provide."

As is evident from the press statement, Ed Young believes that, with dedication and effort, couples can build up their intimacy despite the interference of technology.

Ed Young has long taught his congregation about the importance of intimacy and a healthy sex life within the bonds of marriage. Albeit untraditional, he preaches on these subjects, as well as the topics of parenting and families, quite often. In fact, his latest publication challenges couples to have sex for seven days in a row and consider the benefits that such physical and emotional closeness create. Titled Sexperiment: 7 Days to Lasting Intimacy with Your Spouse, the book provides couples with information about the practical and spiritual value of an active sexual relationship. The book also offers insight into improving a couple's love life and focusing on making one another a priority.
