Sun Microsystems' (now Oracle) NIS was once best-of-breed for Unix identity management - but is reaching the end of its productive life in enterprise environments. NIS suffers from security and manageability issues, and with Sun's "end-of-feature" announcement many corporate IT, security and compliance managers are looking at using AD for their needs. The primary obstacle is the cost and complexity of migrating from NIS to AD, something Likewise addresses with its NIS migration tools and service offerings.
