Sun Microsystems' (now Oracle) NIS was once best-of-breed for Unix identity management - but is reaching the end of its productive life in enterprise environments. NIS suffers from security and manageability issues, and with Sun's "end-of-feature" announcement many corporate IT, security and compliance managers are looking at using AD for their needs.
