Fashion Retail Success Begins in Fifth Grade

Teens/Tweens Launch Their Brands at FashionCampNYC

2012-07-20
NEW YORK, NY, July 20, 2012 (Press-News.org) FashionCampNYC, the only day camp in New York City dedicated entirely to retail fashion, launched their summer program this week, now in its fifth year. As the unemployment rate in the US soars to almost 10%, teenagers (with encouragement from their parents) are diving into their passions and careers earlier and earlier. Girls and boys are starting as young as twelve to follow their fashion heroes and design their own future in retail fashion.

While sales in certain markets are steadily declining, studies show that apparel and fashion items account for approximately $31 billion in online sales alone. The popularity of retail fashion is shooting skyward, as seen this year in FashionCampNYC, which is starting its fifth season with their biggest class ever. As stores like Daffy's are closing their doors for good, this determined generation is imagining the next big retail brand. The Founder and Director of FashionCampNYC Gordon Josey says, "We're seeing more kids than ever before expressing an interest in the business end of fashion - trend tracking, social media, retail management, etc. They understand that one doesn't need to be a designer to be a fashion success." During the one-week program, the campers will:
• Create and come up with a marketing strategy for their own brands
• Learn how social media is changing the retail fashion industry
• Visit the Prada exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art

Josey continues, "The core of FashionCampNYC is that campers are able to meet and network with fashion professionals from visionary companies like Coach, Victoria's Secret, Tommy Hilfiger, Marc Jacobs, Cole Haan and American Eagle. This experience is unparalleled to any other for teens interested in a career in retail fashion!"

About FashionCampNYC
FashionCampNYC, currently in its 5th year, is an intensive five-day hands-on camp experience, taught by the experts, designers and retailers written about in the most popular fashion magazines. The program explores the "business" of fashion, teaching teens — ages 12 to 18 — how to turn their passion into a lucrative profession. Educators include fashion executives, designers, product developers, stylists, bloggers, and editors, touching on every aspect of this creative and colorful industry. Campers take home the skills, inspiration and motivation they need to pursue their dreams and make a name for themselves in the fashion industry.
