Phillip Hare of ByteWyze Computer Services Raises Over $1,000 Multiple Sclerosis

Co-founder of Cary-based IT company rides for third consecutive year to raise awareness for MS research and programs

2010-10-02
CARY, NC, October 02, 2010 (Press-News.org) Phillip Hare of ByteWyze Computer Services recently participated in Bike MS: Historic New Bern Ride 2010 to raise funds to support people living with multiple sclerosis in Eastern North Carolina and throughout the United States. The event attracted over 2,300 cyclists and was held on Saturday, September 11 and Sunday, September 12. It offered cyclists a choice to ride 30, 50, 75, or 100 miles on fully-supported routes. Due to inclement weather, both the 30- and 100-mile routes were closed on Sunday.

Multiple sclerosis (or MS) is a chronic, often disabling disease that attacks the central nervous system. Symptoms range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis. The progress, severity, and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted, but new treatments and advances in research are giving new hope to people affected by the disease. This is the third consecutive year that Hare has participated in Bike MS. He rode a total of 150 miles over the two-day event and raised $1,095. He says that he takes great enjoyment and pride when given the opportunity to combine two of the things that he feels very passionate about: cycling and charity, and the Bike MS event provides him with such an opportunity every year.

"There are so many wonderful causes out there, I wish I had the time (and energy) to support every one," says Hare, who adds that the cause became very personal this year. "I have a client whose son was diagnosed with MS last fallI. It cost $35,000 a year for his medications. A cure is needed, and this event gives me the chance to help raise awareness and funds for this important cause."

Bike MS representatives have said that this year's event had more participants than ever before and they are hoping for a record breaking year in fundraising as well. So far, Bike MS has raised over $1.2 million. Contributions will continue to be accepted until the October 4th deadline and organizers are hoping to make their goal of raising a total of $1.8 million to fund MS research, local programs and services, and advocacy. Donations can be made online by visiting http://www.nationalmssociety.org/chapters/nct/donate/index.aspx.
