YCIS Beijing International School Balanced Education Programme

Between the 11th and 22nd of June, YCIS Beijing held its second annual Enrichment Programme.

2012-08-18
BEIJING, CHINA, August 18, 2012 (Press-News.org) Between the 11th and 22nd of June, YCIS Beijing held its second annual Enrichment Programme. The Enrichment Programme is a relatively new opportunity for students to move away from their normal timetables for a couple of weeks and get involved in activities that will allow them to learn new skills and gain experience outside of the typical classroom environment.

This year, the school held compulsory activities including Art Day, Science Day, an English Film Festival, Invent a Country Day and Beach Day all of which alternated with elective programmes spanning across a wide range of different activities.

This year witnessed an incredibly diverse number of activities as listed below:

Culture Workshop: Students were given the opportunity to explore the cultures of Korea, Canada, Italy, America and Japan through food, music, dance, art, sports, history, geography and literature.

Making Simple Complicated: Students were required to create an amazingly complicated contraption to perform a very simple task. In this case they needed to design something that could blow up and then pop a balloon. This creative activity was inspired by American inventor Rube Goldberg.

Unsolved Crime Investigation: Students became detectives in order to discover more about the assassination of former U.S President John Fitzgerald Kennedy (JFK), looking over evidence given in the trial and trying to identify anything that was missed within the investigation before finally putting on a court trial to display their findings.

Survival Skills 101: For all the YCIS Beijing adventurers, the Survival Skills programme allowed students the chance to learn life skills such as orienteering, map reading, rock climbing, kayaking and also the vital skill of first aid.

Football Studies: The avid fans of the beautiful game were invited to learn more about the most popular sport in the world. The studies included the greatest players of all time, World Cup history, football art, and deeper topics such as ethical issues affecting the game and analysing the financial side of one of the most lucrative businesses on the planet.

The Butterfly Love: Written by Chinese author Liang Zhu, The Butterfly Love remains one of the most famous love stories of all time. Students were required to create their own script for the book, and perform their own version in the form of a theatrical play using props and costumes they designed themselves.

Volunteering in Local Migrant Schools: Students of YCIS undertook the very rewarding task of designing lessons and games for children in a local migrant school, featuring sports, creativity and language.

Exploring Culture through Traditional Costumes: Focusing on the countries of Scotland, Kenya, Russia, India and Bolivia, students were offered the chance to explore culture through traditional costumes, songs and music as well as designing costumes and performing songs and dances from the countries they studied.

The Enrichment Programme was once again an absolute success and proved that the fully-rounded and balanced education at Yew Chung International School of Beijing is more than just intellectual development. It is an education that nurtures the other aspects of growth including artistic, social, spiritual and physical development. Students at YCIS are always encouraged to dream, to create, to question, and to have a sense of identity within the rich and diverse environment within the school. The Enrichment Programme truly encompasses the YCIS philosophy of providing a holistic education for students and respecting cultural diversity.
