Colorado-Based IT Firm Taking the "LEED" on Green Business Practices

IT staffing firm ProtoTest is moving into a new LEED-certified headquarters in Denver, becoming yet another Colorado-based business committed to corporate responsibility.

2012-08-22
DENVER, CO, August 22, 2012 (Press-News.org) Developed by the U.S. Green Building Council in 1998, the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) initiative is a certification system using real, measurable steps which can be taken to ensure that a workplace is an environmentally friendly and healthy place to work. This can include using renewable energy to power the building, providing cleaner air internally than what one would find outdoors, and/or properly sealing the building envelope to reduce energy loss.

ProtoTest is a well-known IT staffing firm, connecting IT professionals with companies throughout Colorado and across the nation.

By re-locating to 1999 Broadway in Denver, Colorado, ProtoTest will be in one of the downtown Denver business district's premier commercial office buildings. The building is not only a LEED Silver-certified office space, it's also been approved as Energy Star compliant.

"In order to truly thrive, businesses must consider more than the needs of their shareholders - they must also consider the needs of their stakeholders," said Pete Dignan, President of ProtoTest. "In today's world, customers and employees expect businesses to assess outcomes beyond fiscal profits. We need to take responsibility for the social and environmental impact we have on the world around us."

In addition to the move to greener office space, the company is committed to donating 10% of their profits to nonprofit organizations in the community. Additionally, Prototest provides permanent employees four paid days for volunteering each year. And local sourcing is given priority in the company's sustainable procurement policy.

"We care about the people we work with," said Dignan. "And, eventually, we realized we had to take steps to demonstrate that we care about the people in our community, too. IT service, in general, involves a lot of electronics and thus a lot of energy. If we can help mitigate that by being environmentally responsible, then that's great. And putting our offices in a LEED-certified building means we'll save on operating expenses. It's really a no-brainer."

ProtoTest has been providing IT staffing solutions since 1998, and will move into their LEED certified building in August of this year. The 1999 Broadway building in downtown Denver is more centrally located to better serve ProtoTest's clients. The new location will also be more accessible to job candidates from all around the Denver metro area.

It's always sunny in Caltech Lab

Its always sunny in Caltech Lab
2012-08-21
PASADENA, Calif.—In orbit around Earth is a wide range of satellites that we rely on for everything from television and radio feeds to GPS navigation. Although these spacecraft soar high above storms on Earth, they are still vulnerable to weather—only it's weather from the sun. Large solar flares—or plasma that erupts from the sun's surface—can cause widespread damage, both in space and on Earth, which is why researchers at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) are working to learn more about the possible precursors to solar flares called plasma loops. Now, they ...
