Michael Gauf Artist Bio
There is no history of ornate doodling, art degree or certificate from the Art Instruction Schools. Instead, what started as a father-son project in 2004 took hold. Raids upon pawnshops, eBay castoffs and scratch-and-dent sales at local music stores netted a slew of canvasses. In very little time, Painted Axe attracted the attention of musicians and special event and festival coordinators from Boston to San Francisco.
A native of Peoria, Ill., Gauf has been a "student" of the guitar and music since high school. Between his full-time risk manager job and parenting three children, he finds time to customize between six and 10 guitars a year. Gauf is careful to point out that while the guitars could be called "works of art," they are not meant to be hung on the wall and admired. Instead, plug it in and let go.
He lives and works in Indianapolis.
Based in Indianapolis, Painted Axe specializes in custom-painted guitars, creating highly unique, distinctive and personal instruments.
