Neighborhood Housing Services of South Florida (NHSSF) to Provide Free Community Leadership Training for Residents

The Miami Community Leadership Forum is an effort to equip emerging leaders with the leadership skills they'll need to be empowered to help shape their community's development.

MIAMI, FL, August 30, 2012

Residents throughout South Florida are invited to sharpen their leadership skills and entrepreneurial abilities in a two-day Miami Community Leadership Forum on September 8th and 9th hosted by Neighborhood Housing Services of South Florida. The Forum is free to attend and will be held at the Joseph Caleb Center. Instructors from the education sector, non-profit organizations, and private sector will guide participants on a series of topics that cover community and leadership issues, with a focus on helping residents learn from each other about how to use leadership skills to work on neighborhood issues.

NHSSF is a non-profit that works with the South Florida neighborhoods to help them stabilize and become revitalized. Since 2005, the organization has had a working relationship with the Brownsville community in Miami-Dade's central urban core area. This is one of the many neighborhood-focused partnerships the organization aims to have.

"For the past eight years, Neighborhood Housing Services of South Florida has remained committed to revitalizing the Brownsville community of Miami-Dade, and as part of that commitment we have worked with those residents provide training to allow them to take the lead in stabilizing and revitalizing their community," shares Benji Power, Director of Community Building at NHSSF. "We know that there are residents who want to play an active role in helping to make their communities better. The Miami Community Leadership Forum is our effort to equip them with the leadership skills they'll need to be empowered to help shape their community's development."

Sponsored by NeighborWorkds America and TD Bank, the Forum will guide 150 South Florida residents through a series of activities and workshops, including leadership training, self-exploration and skills assessment, and an overview of how to understand community issues and policies. A special focus of the Forum is to provide training to residents of Miami-Dade's diverse urban core neighborhoods, including Liberty City, Brownsville, Little Haiti, Wynwood, Allapattah, Overtown, and West Coconut Grove to capture their interest in becoming more effective leaders within their communities.

The Forum will be held on Saturday, September 8, 2012 from 10AM to 4PM and Sunday, September 9th from 1PM to 5PM at the Joseph C. Caleb Center located at 5400 NW 22nd Ave, Room 110.
