RALEIGH, NC, August 31, 2012 (Press-News.org) Water issues have been at the forefront of many communities across North Carolina over the past decade. Increased pollutants in our water supply from pharmaceuticals, industrial dumping and run-off, deteriorating infrastructure, and the controversial practice of "fracking" present critical challenges to our health and our state's economy.
Now several of North America's leading voices on water issues will be the featured speakers at this year's Central Park NC Annual Gathering at STARworks Center on October 18, 2012. The event, called The Future of North Carolina's Water, will feature a stellar lineup of guest speakers, including Maude Barlow, an international water rights activist featured in several well-known documentaries; L. Hunter Lovins, co-founder of the Natural Capitol Institute and an international speaker on the economic impact of natural resources; Michael Shuman, attorney, author, entrepreneur and leading expert on community economics and small business; and Paul Gallay, president of the Hudson Riverkeeper and active supporter of local communities.
The Annual Gathering will be held at STARworks and attendees will have the opportunity to see the glass studios, the CSA garden, biofuels plant, and the ceramics studios and clay factory, and enjoy delicious locally sourced food, live entertainment, glass blowing and a host of other fun activities.
Central Park N.C., (http://centralparknc.org/) is a nonprofit organization designed to promote a new economy based on the sustainable use of natural resources in eight counties in Central North Carolina.
The gathering is open to the public; however, a $30 registration fee is required. To register for the 2012 Annual Gathering, visit http://www.centralparknc.com or call (919) 428-9001.
QUOTES:
"We are excited to take this opportunity to help preserve our state's most valuable and vital natural resource - water," said Nancy Gottovi, executive director of Central Park N.C. "The annual gathering is a wonderful and fun way to focus on a topic that is incredibly pertinent and appropriate to establish a strong future for the great state of North Carolina. Now is the time to safeguard our state's water, and we hope the Annual Gathering will promote the need to take action to ensure this resource continues to be available for future generations."
