SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA, September 13, 2012 (Press-News.org) The final three Shannons Supercar Showdown drivers were rocked by a massive bombshell with the announcement that Series one finalist Samantha Reid is rejoining the competition as a wildcard entry.
The Kelly brothers hope their controversial decision will force the remaining contestants, Jesse Dixon, Glen Wood and Andre Heimgartner, to lift their game.
The move came following disastrous performances by all three male contestants in their first challenge driving the Shannons V8 Supercar.
Dixon's first drive impressed Todd Kelly, however a critical error in judgment saw him lock the car's breaks in his second stint, a costly mistake later mirrored by Heimgartner.
Wood spun out in his first run, forcing mechanics to call him in early. His second run was cleaner but failed to make up much time.
Wood and Dixon landed in the bottom two and were visibly relieved to learn they had both escaped elimination. The elation however, was short lived.
"Sam's here to up the game. You guys really need to step up, otherwise next week one of you will be going home," warned Todd Kelly as Samantha's identity was revealed.
In series one of the competition Reid was best known for her unwavering 'game face' and extraordinary focus. None of her keen edge appears to have been lost.
"My plan is to show them what I've got, and get them on the back foot first up. I've had some amazing opportunities in the past 12 months so I feel that I am in a much better position. It's rare to get a second chance in motorsport, so for me, to have this opportunity is absolutely amazing and I'm going to take it with both hands and do everything I can," she said.
The boys did little to conceal their shock and disappointment at Reid's entrance.
"There are so many thoughts running through my mind, what's she doing here? What's going on? I don't want to be beaten by a girl, so I really badly want to beat her," said Wood.
"You know she's going to be tough to beat and I'm not really happy about her being here," said Dixon.
Samantha Reid's wildcard entry has certainly thrown a spanner in the works, but will it throw the boys off track? Tune in to the semi-final of Shannons Supercar Showdown to see who will be battling it out for the drive of a lifetime in the Bathurst 1000!
Shannons Supercar Showdown airs on Saturday on 7Mate (check local guides for times), and is jointly produced by WTFN and The Media Mix.
