NEW YORK, NY, September 19, 2012
BALAM Dance Theatre (BALAM) returns to the 12th annual DUMBO DANCE FESTIVAL to present the new solo, Antonchu. Anton Zea Nadal of Barcelona, Spain will perform the new piece on Saturday, September 29 at 2 p.m. at the John Ryan Theatre at WHITE WAVE, 25 Jay Street, Brooklyn, New York. This free, international festival is open to the public and does not have reserved seating. Donations are encouraged.
Antonchu, a new piece performed to critical acclaim this past summer in Masnou, Spain, was selected by the DUMBO DANCE FESTIVAL curatorial committee to be presented in this year's festival. BALAM Artistic Director Carlos Fittante created this biographical dance solo, blending ballet and Lester Horton techniques, for the talented dancer, Anton Zea Nadal, a scholarship student at the Alvin Ailey Dance Center.
Through the abstraction of movement, the solo conveys Anton's journey as a youth pursuing his dance dream in New York City. At the heart of the solo, is his robust Catalan physicality and unshakable, youthful optimism. The up and coming dancer selected the music, Vivaldi's flowing Concerto in C for Mandolin. The title, Antonchu, is an affectionate name Anton's grandfather used when addressing him.
"I wanted to create a solo that captured and represented Anton's essence, his unbridled love of dance, giving him a naïve confidence that is irresistible to behold. There is something uplifting for an audience to witness the exuberance and innocence of youth eagerly embarking on a journey into adulthood," said Fittante.
