Results Vary for Children Recovering from Brain Injury

Traumatic brain injuries are a serious concern for millions of Americans. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that approximately 1.7 million people sustain new TBIs every year. TBIs are the result of a blow or bump to the head and may alter normal brain functioning. They range from mild to severe, and can have a wide range of effects. Symptoms of severe TBI include memory loss, dizziness, nausea, personality changes and numbness on one side of the body.

Recent Study on TBI Recovery

A recent study published by the Canadian Medical Association Journal looked at the factors that affect a child's recovery from a TBI. The study found that TBIs that resulted from oxygen deprivation make recovery more difficult and often involve psychological issues. Advanced imaging tests have helped doctors understand the severity of such injuries. However, with children, predictions can be quite difficult to make and may not become apparent until years later, when the child emerges from adolescence.

Factors Affecting Recovery

A major factor affecting how a child recovers is the child's age when injured. Other factors include the occurrence of subsequent injuries and incidence of infection. Identifying these factors does not provide a clear road to recovery, but may give doctors helpful guidance in determining the best recovery methods for their patients.

Remedies for TBI Patients

When a child sustains a brain injury, it is often the fault of another party. Falls and car accidents are the first and second-most causes of TBIs, respectively. Negligent drivers, faulty playground equipment, and even inattentive doctors may be at fault.

When negligence is suspected, families are encouraged to seek legal advice to obtain compensation for injuries and help with recovery.

If your child has experienced a brain injury, consider consulting with a personal injury attorney to understand your legal options.
