GURNEE, IL, October 06, 2012 (Press-News.org) Dr Shapira and his wife Elise were together for over 40 years when she succumbed to cancer after battling breast and ovarian cancer for over 20 years. Shortly before Elise's death her son Billy ran the Marathon in her honor. In December Dr Shapira decided to honor his wifes memory by raising money for cancer research by running the marathon.
Dr Shapira was not a runner and his first run was less than 100 yards when he had an enormous problem, how to get home. Two weeks after starting to train for the marathon he had surgery for a torn meniscus in his right knee. Undeterred he began training again one week later and in September ran a 20 mile training run. He trained with CARA, The Chicago Area Running Association.
This Sunday, October 7th he is running the Marathon with the American Cancer Society. He is also giving an inspirational talk during the Friday pre-race dinner they sponsor.
