Oregon's Sex Offender Registration Policies: Doing More Harm Than Good?

2012-10-13
Every year, roughly 500 to 600 sex offenders leave Oregon prisons and reenter the community. Of these, only four percent are caught committing another sex crime within three years of release, according to state records. Recidivism is actually lower for sex offenses compared to most other serious felonies. For instance, one study from the Bureau of Justice Statistics found that within three years of release from prison, 70.2 percent of armed robbers were rearrested, 74 percent of burglars were rearrested, and 70.2 percent of those convicted of illegal weapons offenses ...

2 Fatal Newport Beach Bicycle Crashes in 1 September Weekend

2012-10-13
Newport Beach, Calif., mourned the loss of two female bicyclists in separate motor-vehicle accidents in one September 2012 weekend. First, on Friday morning, a 29-year-old Corona Del Mar nutritionist cycling on Pacific Coast Highway was run over by a stake-bed truck turning right at Bayside Drive. Sadly, she died at the scene. Second, a well liked and athletic 57-year-old Newport Beach family-practice physician from Irvine was the victim of a hit-and-run accident on Newport Coast Drive. Cycling with her husband, who was not hurt in the accident, she was struck by a black ...

Oil and Gas Worker Deaths Increase with Oil Booms

2012-10-13
When oil booms hit, the number of injuries and deaths rise. Louisiana saw this when the rush began in the state in 2008. In 2009, three men died, then two men in 2010, followed by one death in 2011. There were many others whose lives were spared, but they suffered injuries that had a major effect on their lives. However, when shale development lessens, the injuries and deaths do as well. There has not been a death reported in Louisiana in over one year. More Oil Means More Potential for Accidents When the rush occurred in Louisiana in 2008, many workers came to the ...

Divorce, Support Payments and a Change of Income

2012-10-13
The use of child support or spousal support may be necessary to provide for children or a spouse after a marriage has ended. The courts determine the equitable amount needed for child support and issue an order as part of the divorce decree. What happens when the non-custodial spouse losses their job or suffers a significant loss of income? In New Jersey, it is important to determine if the income is permanent. Because your obligation to pay child support is created by a court order, your job loss does not automatically eliminate your obligation for making your child ...

Multi-Million Dollar Verdict in Missouri Highlights Dangerous Products

2012-10-13
Every day - in work and at home - Missourians use products manufactured by dozens, if not hundreds, of manufacturers. Most of the time, they simply trust that manufacturers create and design these products with sufficient expertise and skill that they will be safe to use, or if there is some danger associated with its use, that the manufacturer will provide appropriate warnings of these dangers. Unfortunately when manufacturers fail to adhere to these basic duties and produce unsafe or defective products, consumers can be severely injured, and in some cases, killed. The ...

Texting and Driving Still Causing Car Accidents In Seattle And Beyond

2012-10-13
Back in 2010, texting while driving became a primary offense in Washington State, meaning that drivers could be pulled over for reading, writing or sending text messages. Previously, texting behind the wheel had been a secondary offense; in other words, motorists could be ticketed for texting, but only if they had been pulled over for some other infraction, such as speeding. In the first year of the strengthened anti-texting law, state troopers ticketed 602 drivers for texting behind the wheel. But, despite heavy enforcement, many drivers did not seem to get the message: ...

Study: Nursing Home Falls Hit 1 in 5 Newly-Admitted Patients

2012-10-13
The frailty that so often accompanies old age puts senior citizens at risk of experiencing serious, and even life-threatening, injuries. For that reason, many elderly Wisconsin residents choose to move into nursing homes. By doing so, they hope to remain safe from the hazards that come with living on their own. Unfortunately, a recent study shows that this is not always the case. According to a study published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, approximately one in five patients experience a fall within the first month of being admitted. The study looked ...
