The Studio OC Fitness to Empower Youth With 6-Week Teen Fitness Program

Teens Will Learn How to Maintain a Healthy Body Weight through Proper Nutrition and Exercise

2012-10-14
TUSTIN, CA, October 14, 2012 (Press-News.org) According to the National Eating Disorders Association, in the United States, nearly 10 million females are fighting a life and death battle with an eating disorder such as anorexia or bulimia. The Studio OC Fitness today announced a 6-week Teen Fitness program that will promote proper nutrition and exercise for teens to achieve optimal performance in their daily lives. Teen Fitness will begin October 15 and deliver a variety of classes such as Jazz, Yoga, Pilates, Zumba and Ballet Barre taught by industry leaders for girls aged nine to 14. The classes will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:14 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. and will welcome guest speakers that will educate class participants on the dangers of eating disorders.

"In a culture where weight gain is frowned upon and young women think that looking like a Victoria's Secret model is normal, it is so important that teens recognize that there are healthy ways to stay in shape," says Jill Goodwin, co-owner of The Studio OC Fitness who is certified in junior fitness. "The Teen Fitness program at the studio will provide a solution to educate, assist and support our local girls on how they can maintain their health through proper nutrition and exercise."

The Teen Fitness classes will be taught by instructor and choreographer Kristina Marquez. The program format will provide teens with an effective way to create healthy fitness and nutritional goals through high-energy workouts, open peer-to-peer discussions, and educational presentations. Marquez is a member of the National Championship Dance Team at Orange Coast College and has extensive experience in creating choreography for dance teams, beauty pageants, and dance studios throughout Orange County. Guest Zumba instructor and personal trainer Dawn Angel, who has earned multiple licenses in the ZUMBA Fitness Program, will also teach.

In addition to the weekly workouts, the November 14 class will host Registered Dietician Lisa Andrew, M.S., and 16-year-old Kim Kolenic, who recently recovered from anorexia. Andrew will teach about nutrition and better eating habits. Kolenic will share her story and explain the negative outcomes that may arise from eating disorders. She will discuss with class participants that if they struggle with an eating disorder, there is always a way back from it.

"I lost so much of myself in just three months as the disorder ate away at my body and severed my relationships," said Kolenic. "I want to share my recovery story to influence teens and make a difference in their lives by letting them know they can be happy with who they are."

The 6-week Teen Fitness program costs $180, sor $20 per class. It is strongly encouraged that participants sign up for all 6 weeks to bond as a group and be comfortable in sharing with each other. Space is limited and pre-registration is recommended. Attendees will receive an early bird discount at $144 for signing up before Wednesday, October 10.
