LEONIA, NJ, October 18, 2012 (Press-News.org) The League of Women Voters of Northern Valley is giving residents in northern New Jersey a resource to help understand two state questions that will appear on the ballot in the upcoming General Election. The League of Women Voters of New Jersey Education Fund has posted on its web site simple, straightforward information and analyses about the two public questions that will appear on the November 6 ballot.
"With the League's nonpartisan assessment of issues, the electorate can review the public questions, make an educated decision and vote," said Joyce Luhrs, member of the board of directors and public relations chair of the League of Women Voters of Northern Valley.
The Building Our Future Bond Act, the first public question, authorizes the State of New Jersey to issue 750 million dollars worth of bonds to New Jersey's postsecondary institutions to build, equip and expand higher education facilities. The second public question asks voters to approve an amendment to the New Jersey Constitution allowing contributions set by law to be taken from the salaries of Supreme Court Justices and Superior Court Judges for their employee benefits.
For each question, the League provides background information and offers reasons to vote yes and to vote no. The League takes no position on either public question. New Jersey voters may call the League of Women Voters of New Jersey's toll free voter assistance hotline, 1-800-792-vote (8683), to request information about the public questions or other voting related concerns.
The League was an outgrowth of the 19th amendment passed in 1920 giving women the right to vote. With 800 local Leagues throughout the country, the organization gained prestige by maintaining its nonpartisanship; sponsoring candidates' forums for local, state and national elections; holding registration drives; disseminating nonpartisan information on candidates; and holding public meetings to discuss current issues. League membership is open to both men and women of voting age who support its mission.
The League of Women Voters of Northern Valley draws members from Alpine, Bergenfield, Cliffside Park, Closter, Cresskill, Demarest, Dumont, Edgewater, Emerson, Englewood, Englewood Cliffs, Fort Lee, Hackensack, Harrington Park, Haworth, Hillsdale, Leonia, Montvale, New Milford, Northvale, Norwood, Old Tappan, Park Ridge, River Vale, Tenafly, Washington Township and Woodcliff Lake.
