Barrie Mayor Tours Shred North in an Effort to Increase Awareness of Identity Theft

BARRIE, ON, October 25, 2012 (Press-News.org) Shred North, the local paper shredding company in Barrie, Ontario recently welcomed Barrie Mayor Jeff Lehman on a tour of their facility in an effort to increase awareness of identity theft in the community.

According to a survey conducted by the Canadian Privacy Commissioner's office in 2010, 1 in 6 Canadians have already been victims of identity theft.

"One of the best ways to help decrease identity theft in our community is through increased awareness of the issue", states Daryl Woytowicz, General Manager of Shred North. "Many people do not realize just how big of a problem this has become. Document shredding is one of the most proactive methods of protection".

Shred North, a finalist for the upcoming Greater Barrie Chamber of Commerce EDO New Business Award for 2012, also held a charity shred day in order to both raise funds for community support group Gilda's Club as well as to assist in combating identity theft in the community.

In addition to shredding paper for the public, the shred day also featured a community booth run by the Ontario Provincial Police to help educate members of the community in regard to the importance of identity theft prevention.

"The only way we can effectively increase awareness of identity theft in our community is through the support of influential people like the Mayor", states Woytowicz. "Barrie is lucky in the sense that Mayor Lehman is willing to be proactive and learn more about the issues that face our society as a whole".

The local paper shredding company has already hosted a number of prominent community leaders including MPP Rodney Jackson and MP Patrick Brown. The hope is that by increasing community awareness of the issue everyone will benefit from the inexpensive preventative methods available to them, such as local document destruction.
