ATLANTA, GA, November 01, 2012 (Press-News.org) Winter is quickly approaching this year, threatening to strike soon. In 2010, the Jan. 10 snowstorm wreaked havoc on roadways in Northeast Georgia. Should a similar storm hit this year, drivers need to be prepared. Accidents and injuries can be avoided by taking safety measures to help prevent motor vehicle accidents, including multi-car collisions, during the winter months in Georgia.
Preparation
- Make sure to check your vehicle's brakes, tires, battery, defrosting and heating system as well as the windshield wipers. Use nonfreezing washer fluid.
- Protect your radiator and engine from freezing by changing the antifreeze.
- Do not warm your vehicle in a confined area without proper ventilation.
- See that your fuel tank is almost full to keep ice out.
- Always bring a winter survival pack, including sleeping bags or blankets; extra warm clothes, a flashlight and batteries; knife; first-aid kit; nonperishable food; shovel; matches; booster cables; and a brush and windshield scraper.
- Plan out your route before you go anywhere and let others know where you are headed.
- Always check weather forecasts before traveling.
While Driving
- When accelerating and decelerating, do so slowly. This is a good way to regain traction and avoid skids.
- Slow down for lights well in advance.
- When braking, use firm but steady pressure on the pedal.
- Avoid stopping on an icy road if you do not need to.
- If you start to slide, steer and look in the direction you intend to go.
- If you can, avoid stopping when you go uphill. Before heading up a hill, gain momentum.
- Do not use cruise control if you are driving on any slippery roads.
- Be careful on overpasses, bridges and in sheltered spots where ice does not thaw as fast.
When Stuck
- If you are in an area without many people around, stay near your vehicle. Do not walk in a storm unless your destination is visible from your vehicle.
- Dial 911 once you realize you cannot move your vehicle.
- If you are stuck off the road, check to see that your exhaust pipe is free from debris.
- Do not use too much energy trying to get your vehicle out. Sweating in freezing temperatures can lead to hypothermia.
- Make sure that your emergency kit will last you until you receive help.
Despite the usually moderate weather in Georgia, there is always the possibility of snow and ice. If you or someone you know is involved in a serious car accident this winter, contact an experienced personal injury attorney in your area for help with your case.
