News reports indicate as many as 10,000 people were exposed to the virus because of rodents in the walls of the camping structures there.
The hantavirus is carried in mouse urine and feces and can result in a severe lung infection or even death. While the story made the news because of the number of people exposed, The Atlanta pest control experts at Team Pest USA want people to understand that the threat of illness from rodents is not limited to those who visited Yosemite.
From the Black Plague in medieval Europe to the hantavirus in 2012, rodents are often the source of infection that causes major human illnesses. Atlanta rodent control experts explain that more commonly, rodents may infect people with listeria, but that hantavirus exposure can occur anywhere there is a rodent infestation. Listeria is another illness, usually considered a form of food-poisoning, found in the droppings of rodents.
To avoid exposure to rodent-borne illness, Team Pest USA suggests contacting an exterminator as soon as a rodent population is noticed. Evidence of a rodent problem can include scratching in the walls or ceiling or sighting rodents or their droppings.
