Long Beach, CA Dentist Encourages Smokers to Kick the Habit This November

Dr. Joseph Marvizi, a Long Beach CA dentist, recognizes the American Cancer Society's Great American Smokeout as a perfect time to put down the cigarettes.

2012-11-15
LOS ANGELES, CA, November 15, 2012 (Press-News.org) The American Cancer Society sponsors the Great American Smokeout annually to encourage people to stop using tobacco. On Nov. 15 Americans can stomp out their cigarettes for the last time.

Dr. Joseph Marvizi, a Long Beach CA dentist specializing in Invisalign and Invisalign Teen, wants to inform patients on the risks associated with tobacco products. Tobacco puts users at higher risks for numerous health issues, including lung cancer, stroke, heart disease, high blood pressure and oral cancer. Tobacco also inhibits your taste buds and your sense of smell.

The ingredients in tobacco, specifically nicotine and tar, cause serious health complications, says Long Beach dental pro. Many patients that smoke have discolored teeth and bad breath. Other patients experience white sores called leukoplakia in their mouths and inside their cheeks that could be early signs of oral cancer. Carcinogens can also cause gingivitis, the early stage of gum disease. Gingivitis, if caught early, can be eradicated, but once it advances to gum disease it can cause serious problems. Gum disease can deteriorate the teeth as well as the gums and bones in the mouth.

Chewing and dipping come with their own set of risks. People who use smokeless tobacco products frequently have gums that pull away from the teeth. These gaps can harbor gum disease, and patients often risk losing teeth to extended tobacco use. Marvizi, one of the best dentists in Long Beach, has replaced many teeth lost to tobacco. Tobacco users lose teeth more often than non-users. Chewing and dipping also raise users' risks of oral cancer.

Friends and family should encourage their loved ones to stop smoking on Nov. 15 or to make plans to quit. Smokers can attend Great American Smokeout events in their areas. People that have counseling, support groups, nicotine supplements and lots of encouragement have a better chance of quitting successfully. Smoke Free offers tips to people trying to quit tobacco.

Patients can visit their family dentistry offices to receive a dental cleaning and oral cancer screenings. Smokers and those who recently quit can get a thorough cleaning to remove any tar and nicotine from their teeth.
