Time Domain and Metrom Rail Announce Exclusive Partnership Agreement

New Railway Safety Solution To Be Deployed Based On PulsON UWB OEM Module

2012-11-15
HUNTSVILLE, AL, November 15, 2012 (Press-News.org) Time Domain, a leader in ultra wideband (UWB) product development, and Metrom Rail, a leading provider of railway sensor technology, today announced an exclusive partnership to deploy safety solutions based on Time Domain's PulsON 400 series of ultra wideband (UWB) OEM modules.

"Time Domain is excited to partner with Metrom Rail, whose visionary commitment to improving safety for rail workers has inspired new uses for UWB technology," said Rachel Reinhardt, President and CEO of Time Domain. "Metrom is a great example of how our PulsON technology can enable a smart partner to meet an underserved market with a compelling need."

Metrom will use a ruggedized variant of Time Domain's current PulsON 410 Ranging and Communications Module (P410 RCM) to provide precision distance measurements between rail vehicles, augmenting GPS in difficult environments such as tunnels and canyons. This enhanced situational awareness is intended to help rail customers prevent costly accidents and work stoppages.

Metrom will begin deployment of the UWB safety solution on a Class 1 railroad customer in early Q1 2013. The installed base in the first year is expected to be in the thousands, ramping to tens of thousands over the next two years.

"Time Domain's UWB technology was the clear choice to provide the high precision and reliability we need in these difficult, GPS-denied environments," said Jim Marchi, Metrom's CEO. "We're excited about our partnership with Time Domain and what it will mean for rail safety."

Time Domain sells its UWB OEM modules to a diverse customer base comprised of industry, government/defense, and academic users. In addition to the precision location capability, the company also offers a version that functions as a short range radar sensor, and sells packages to support university lab and research projects. Time Domain also has an experienced Contract Services group available to provide design and development support, team with partners on proposal activities, and reduce customers' time to market for new products.
