Unfortunately, drugged driving can have the same devastating results as drunk driving.
Connection Between Prescription Medications and Car Accidents
According to a recent study published in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, people who take prescription medications for insomnia, anxiety and depression may be at greater risk of causing a car accident than those not taking psychotropic drugs. Researchers found that psychotropic drugs alter brain functioning and could impair a person's ability to drive.
As part of the study, researchers in Taiwan compared the incidence of drug use among 5,200 people involved in major car accidents and compared that data with drug use numbers among 31,000 people with no history of serious accidents. They discovered that the people involved in car accidents were more likely to have taken psychotropic drugs for any length of time.
Researchers were specifically examining the effects of benzodiazepines - a class of drug used to treat anxiety and depression - as well as antidepressants, antipsychotics and Z-drugs, which are used to treat insomnia. While there was a clear link between benzodiazepines, antidepressants, and Z-drugs and car crashes, there was no evidence linking antipsychotic drugs to a higher rate of accidents. They have encouraged physicians to advise their patients to be extra careful when driving if they are taking these medications.
Drugged Driving Is Dangerous
Although further research is necessary to explore the connection between psychotropic drugs and car accidents, it is clear that getting behind the wheel after taking medication can be dangerous. Furthermore, when a driver on prescription medication causes a car accident, his behavior may constitute negligence and he may be liable for the injuries and property damage he caused.
