YONKERS, NY, November 18, 2012 (Press-News.org) YonkersMadison Square Garden was filled with excitement on Monday, November 5th, 2012 as tennis legends Andre Agassi, John McEnroe, Patrick Rafter and Pete Sampras competed in the PowerShares Series. The hype at one local tennis club was building for weeks prior to the event.
Yonkers Tennis Center was asked to showcase their highly successful 10 and Under Tennis program on the big night. Directly before Rafter and Sampras competed in the first set, fifteen Yonkers Tennis Center players and their coaches put on a 45-minute on-court demonstration, all while fans poured into the arena and cheered them on.
The purpose of the demonstration was to raise awareness about 10 and Under Tennis and show the results of what this method of teaching can do. Yonkers Tennis Center is recognized by the United States Tennis Association (USTA) as a leader in 10 and Under Tennis instruction. They were recently featured in a USTA Eastern video about the benefits of running a 10 and Under Tennis program.
"Yonkers Tennis Center has everything right," says USTA Director of Coach Education & Development, Kirk Anderson. "They were among the first to be using the new formats for 10 and Under Tennis, including smaller courts, lower nets, shorter racquets and softer balls. They have a highly trained and qualified staff who are experts with youngsters, and provide plenty of opportunities for kids to play tennis."
The night, which ended with Rafter winning the Nasdaq Indexes Cup after defeating McEnroe in the final set, was a huge success, and the Yonkers Tennis Center kids were ecstatic to have been a part of it.
"The coolest thing is that I got to play on the court at Madison Square Garden and then I got to watch Agassi, McEnroe, Rafter and Sampras play on that same court! I also loved carrying Agassi's bag. He shook my hand and autographed two orange balls for me," said 10-year-old Lauren Alexander, an excited participant and Yonkers Tennis Center player.
