LOS ANGELES, CA, November 24, 2012
Los Angeles Doula, Melanie Wachsman of Doula Mellie will offer a new class this coming year titled, "An Introduction to Breastfeeding and the Art of Self-Attachment." Melanie, a certified birth and postpartum doula and lactation educator, describes self attachment as "Self attachment or the breast crawl is where the baby finds the breast on their own and learn how to breastfeed instinctually." UNICEF, and it's partners along with the scientific community strongly recommend and promote initiating breastfeeding as early as within a half an hour of birth. "Every newborn, when placed on the mother's abdomen soon after birth, has the ability to find her mother's breast all on her own and to decide when to take the first breastfeed." This is called the "Breast crawl".A Doula is also known as a non- medical labor coach who assists women before, during, or after childbirth well as her partner and/or family by providing information, physical assistance, and emotional support. The goal of a doula is for the mother to feel safe and comfortable and providing support which may include physical assistance; massage, maintaining a supporting posture or providing water. Emotional support; providing company, encouragement, information, and acting as an advocate for the expectant mother and family.
It is important to be comfortable and confident in the choice of a doula. Melanie's birth doula services include pre labor visits, labor and postpartum. Her commitment as a doula is to ensure that the expectant mother has the birth they envision. "Whether your path includes meditation, medication or both, you can count on the birth to be what you design for you and your child's birthing experience." Melanie's studies also include prenatal yoga, breath work, pre/postnatal nutrition, pregnancy massage, hypnobirthing and lactation.
